History of Birobijan

Birobijan appeared as a village which was reorganized into working village. In 1923 it was renamed into Birbijan: due to the name of the place which was located between rivers the Bira and the Birjan.

In 1934 Birobijan became a centre of Jewish autonomous region. Birobijan became the city in 1937.
