History of Barnaul

Barnaul was founded in 1730s in the place of the village Ust-Barnaul as a village Barnaul. This was connected with building of silver processing factory. The name of the city means "wolf river" ("boryan" - wolves, "ul" - river). Since 1747 till 1917 it became a center of the Altai region. In 1771 it became a city.

In 1823 the first Siberian paper factory was built and then glass factory, etc.

In the second half of the XIX century Barnaul became a big trade center of the Altai region. Flour, fur, leather industries were developed.

In 1934 the first textile factory is Siberia was built (it processed cotton brought from Asia).

During the Greta Patriotic War many industrial enterprises from European part of the USSR were evacuated in Barnaul.
