History of Baltiysk
South-western side of Zemlandsky peninsula is located on the place where two elements are fighting: water and wind. In the result of complicated interaction of sea streams and streams of the rovers Visla and Pregol bay was formed. Entrances to the sea changed constantly.
In the end of the XIII century - beginning of the XIV century Zemlandsky peninsula had completely been formed. Several settlements appeared which jointed together and formed a city called Pillau. The name was taken from the Baltic language, in which the root "pil" meant "fortress".
The largest settlement was called "Vogramm" which was situated on the coast of the bay.
In chronicles (in 1430) village named Pill was mentioned, which was situated to the south near the mount Poruntbude where an ancient fortress had been located may centuries before.
In a century a new peninsula appeared. It was Haken. On Haken the city Pillau was built.
The main even happened during Swedish-Polish war. That was the battle in the fortress Pillau. The war ended and Swedish forces left.
In 1725 the village on the peninsula Haken was given a status of the city.
In 1757 during seven year war Russian fleet blocked Pillau. When Russian forces were there, building of the harbor was realized. It was the place of the location of the Baltic fleet.
In 1807 French forces reached Pillau. The fortress was attacked many times. But it did not fall till the peaceful agreement.
In the XIX century Pillau was an important harbor. In 1856 railway Pillau- Konigsberg was built. In 1902 ship canal was constructed. As a result ships could go to Konigsberg without shipment in Pilau. This negatively influenced much the economic situation.
On 27 November, 1946 Pillau was renamed into the city Baltiysk and it became the part of the Kaliningrad region.
In 1952 Military maritime base of the Baltioc Fleet was made in Baltiysk. On 15, August, 1994 Baltic city region was formed. It included Baltiysk, Primorsk, the part of Zelenograd region.
