Geography of Astrakhan

The Astrakhan region is situated in the south-east of the Eastern European plain in the Pre-Caspian lowland, in the temperate climate, in the zone of deserts. The region stretches 400 km along the two sides of the Volga-Ahtbutin water-meadow.

The absolute north point is located on the border with Volgograd region and the south point on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The extreme west point is on the border with Chernoyarsk region.

The main landscape of the region is represented by plain with massive of sand, lakes, etc.

The absolute point of the Caspian Sea is 27 m below the level of the World Ocean. To the north from the absolute point this level reaches +15-20 m. The highest point is the mount Big Bogro - 161.9 m, which is situated in the north-east of the region.

The Astrakhan region has the second time zone as Moscow has, but the local time is 42 minutes ahead Moscow time.

The Astrakhan region is situated in the Povozhsky region, the South federal okrug.

Geographical situation of the Astrakhan region is rather specific. The Astrakhan region is located on the border of Europe and Asia, the Volga flows into five seas.
