Arkhangelsk is located 1133 km from Moscow to the north. Arkhangelsk is located on the banks of the North Dvina, on the islands of its delta making the Dvina inlet of the White Sea. In Arkhangelsk there are sea and river ports. There is a railway station and an airport.

Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584 by the order of Ivan the Great.

Since XVII century till today Arkhangelsk has been on of the main biggest sea ports in the north of Russia.

Arkhangelsk is an administrative centre of the Arkhangelsk region. Arkhangelsk is situated in the outfall of the North Dvina (in the place where the North Dvina flows into the White Sea). The territory of Arkhangelsk is 29 442 hectares. City land line stretches along the rivers by 35 km.

The climate of Arkhangelsk is subtropical, martial with long winter and short summer. It is formed under the influence of northern seas and air mass from the Arctic region in conditions of shortage of sun radiation. The average temperature in January -13 C, July +17 C. The level of precipitations is 529 mm a year.

Arkhangelsk is not only an industrial centre of the region, but also a cultural and historical capital of this region, it is a motherland of north culture, tradition, history. In Arkhangelsk there are Pomorsky Sate University, State Technical University, State Medical Academy. In Arkhangelsk there are 3 professional theatres: theatre of drama named by Lomonosov, youth theatre-studio, puppet theatre, many exhibition halls and museums.
