Brief history of Anapa

There was a settlement of sinds in the place where Anapa is located now. This was an ancient city in Sindsk harbor (or Sindika). The city joined to the Bosporus state (from 4 B.C till 3 A.D) and it was called Gorghyppya by the name of the governor Gorypp. In the XIV century it was a colony Mapa. In 1475 it was conquered by Turkey. In 1781-1782 a Turkish fortress was built. In the XVIII century when Russian came the settlement had the name Anapa. There are some variants of the origin of this name.

During the Russian-Turkish war it was conquered three times by Russian forces (1791, 1808, 1828). It joined Russia in 1829 according to Adrianopolsky treaty.

Anapa became a city since 1846. Anapa became a resort since 1866. resort building began in Anapa at the end of the XIX century. During the Greta Patriotic war the resort was completely destroyed and reconstructed only in the 1950s.
